School and Community Workshops

"Performance and lessons were excellent.  Yvonne and Kathleen were great.  All the students were engaged.  They brought to life a part of Canadian History that we do no know enough about." - McKay Elementary

V'ni Dansi offers workshops to communities and schools.

Through such workshops, we aim to share our culture and to encourage cross-generational interaction within communities. We can offer short workshops of 1-3 hours or longer workshop intensives of up to four days. Typically, the shorter workshops are appropriate for schools and/or community groups interested in learning more about Métis traditional dance. Some of our short workshops can be offered as a series of classes which allows the participants to prepare for a short performance to share what they have learned with others.

Our longer workshop intensives are usually appropriate for a community group. We have offered such workshops as a two, three or four-day dance intensive in a chosen community and the process leads to a community performance for local audiences. We believe that this workshop intensive brings communities together, and trains local dancers in traditional Métis dance, enabling them to develop their own local practices. Traditional dances taught are: The Red River Jig, The Reel of Four, The Reel Of Eight, The Duck Dance, The Drops of Brandy, The Heel n Toe Polka, The Seven Step, The Broom Dance, The Sash Dance, and The Waltz Quadrille.  One person from each community visited will be asked to be the community dance coordinator and to ensure that dances are rehearsed and performed on a regular basis.  The final community performance will be videotaped to provide an opportunity for ongoing training and a reference for each community.  Recorded music will also be provided and made available to each community.

To offer workshops, we need a space with a suitable dance floor (concrete, or carpet laid over concrete are not suitable choices as they cause leg injuries to the dancers) floating hardwood, or laminate. We also require a sound system to play recorded dance music.

Pricing is dependent on workshop format. Please call 604.358.7435 for more information. We look forward to visiting your school or community soon!
